Congratulations to Erika Guerrero for being honored as the Spotlight on Excellence April 2018!

Erika Guerrero brought national attention to the wonderful work being done by her students and members of the Alamo Heights High School Unified Champion Club.

Named a Unified Champion School by the Texas Special Olympics Organization earlier in the year, Erika and her team were propelled into the national spotlight through the work they do to make AHHS a unified campus. As a result, the national organization, Special Olympics North America (SONA), asked to visit the Champion School in February of 2018. Erika jumped into action! Supported by her team and students, Erika prepared tours of the campus to showcase the Learn-Work-Play-Live mantra, worked alongside theater teacher Andrew Denny to create a Unified Theater Production of “This Is My School, Too!” and established an un-run to showcase the club’s Unified Run, Walk and Roll into Inclusion 5K held annually in the Spring. Creating invitations, programs, flyers; coordinating scripts, facilities, entertainment, snacks and more…for 350 national visitors was no small feat! Erika did it all with a grace and style, asking her students to help with all tasks, providing an inclusive opportunity for her students in the planning and preparation as well!

On the day of the event, visitors were welcomed to the cheers of the AHHS Cheerleaders and Spurs Dance Team, accompanied by the Might Mule Band! They witnessed the blue and gold spirit of inclusivity throughout their two-hour visit. They shared their amazement with the club, school, and district, sharing how they wished their home school culture and climate was as inclusive! Closing the day with an un-run, with the AHHS student body in the stands of Orem Stadium, providing guests with a wonderful example of how the students, staff, and community embrace the unique qualities of all our students. At the core of it all, Erika served the guiding hand that showcased the students, the club and our schools in the best possible light.”
