Gener Phillips Retirement

Alamo Heights ISD Athletic Director and Girls Basketball Head Coach, Gene Phillips, announced his retirement, effective this summer.

Superintendent Dr. Kevin Brown shared, “Gene has been a dear friend to Alamo Heights ISD for the past ten years. He has served our students and our community very well. Our athletic programs routinely rank in the Top 10 in the state, earning numerous state championships under his leadership. Gene has devoted his career to the extra-curricular and athletic success of children and he will be greatly missed.”

“I could not think of a better place to complete my career,” Gene shared. “Alamo Heights is a great community with great kids and great people. The decision to retire is difficult, but even more so when you are surrounded by coaches, colleagues and a community who are so supportive of academics and extracurricular activities. I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to be a small part of the legacy that is Alamo Heights ISD.”

Gene has had an amazing career, one that started on the basketball court in high school, where his love for the game prompted an 81-point, single-game scoring record in Texas High School basketball, a record that still stands today. He achieved a similar record while in college at Southern Methodist University, scoring 51-points against the University of Texas, a Southwest Conference single-game scoring record! Gene was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976, the Southern Methodist University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame in 2013.

He will continue to be a huge fan, supporting our Mules for years to come, and will forever encourage children to realize their potential through participation in sports and the development of teamwork.
