Alamo Heights ISD is committed to keeping the community informed about the work of the Board of Trustees. This board summary highlights the action and recognitions from the latest Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Organization of Trustees

Ty Edwards and Hunter Kingman were sworn in for new terms representing Place 3 and Place 4. 

Trustees selected new officers: Carey Hildebrand, President; Ty Edwards, Vice President; Lauren McLaughlin, Secretary; and Hunter Kingman, Assistant Secretary.

Recognitions

Powering the Profile
Maricela Arce
, 1st grade Spanish Immersion teacher at Woodridge, was recognized for Powering the Profile for embodying the AHISD Profile of a Learner. Visit the AHISD YouTube Channel for a video showing how she empowers her students to “think critically and creatively.”

H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards State Finalist
Monica Lopez
, a special education teacher at Alamo Heights HS, was recently honored as a state finalist at the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Lopez was one of five finalists in the “Rising Stars- Secondary” category which recognizes teachers with less than 10 years of experience. She received a $1,000 check for herself and a $1,000 grant for her school.

2026 AAABSE District of Distinction
Alamo Heights ISD was recently recognized as a District of Distinction by the Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators. AAABSE's District of Distinction designation is reserved for school districts that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, student success, and the holistic development of every learner. Marvin Walker, Girls Basketball Coach and Special Education teacher at Alamo Heights HS, and Sergeant at Arms for AAABSE’s Executive Committee presented the award.

Thespian National Qualifiers
National Thespian Qualifiers Mia Joseph, Skylar Worth, Sebastian Mireles, Enzo Garica, Jace Herrera, Vivian Davids, Henry Mossor and Fallon Edwards were recognized. The National Festival takes place in June.

VASE Medalists
K. Bartlett
and Anjaleen Cruz Hernandez qualified for the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event, also called VASE, held at the end of April. They both received a 4, the highest score at state.

UIL State Journalism Qualifier
Alexandra Cubeta
is a UIL State Academic Qualifier in the News Writing category. She advanced to state after placing 3rd at the Regional competition. She will compete at the UIL state meet May 18.

All-State Journalism
Magali Roibon
earned All-State Journalism recognition. Students must accumulate 50 points in one school year and points do not carry over from year to year. It takes most students the entire school year to achieve enough points. However, Magali had enough points by December and actually finished the year with 99 points.

UIL Award of Merit - Yearbook
The Yearbook received the UIL Award of Distinguished Merit for the 18th straight year. It is the state's highest honor and the gold medal in Publishing.The Yearbook was also recognized in Balfour Publishing's Yearbook Yearbook which is a national award that recognizes the best yearbook publications from elementary schools through colleges. Students are: Ben Brown, Alexandra Cubeta, Nick Devota, Sayers Hennessey, Trenten Labatt, Cito Longoria, Jamie Moses, Pedro Nunez, Cole Smith, Harrison Taylor, Hayden White, William Zackary, Joseph Angulo, John Bonillas, Tessa Bordelon, Adelaide Cooper, Ava Escamilla, Tommy Funk, Acalain Garza, Carolina Guardiola, Eva Lake, Jasmine Miller, Ayana Ochoa, Margaret Raney, Sam Smiley, Hatty Tankin, and Isabela Villasenor.

UIL Award of Achievement - Hoof Print
The Hoof Print received the UIL's Award of Achievement which is the state's second highest honor and the silver medal in publishing. Students are: Jocelyn Bezner, Christian Chiscano, Ansley Embrey, Acalain Garza, Cuatro Hill, Andrea Muniz, Magali Roibon, Syler Schones, Maddie Turner, and Andrew Williams.

UIL State Tennis Qualifiers
Three AHHS tennis players qualified for the UIL State Tennis Tournament held in San Antonio. Allison Crane advanced to the state quarterfinals in girls singles. Ellie Rose and Hallie Zielger played in the round of 16.

UIL State Track and Field Qualifiers
Two athletes will represent AHISD at the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin this week. Jack Hollimon qualified in the 300m hurdles. Alzara Mysliwiec qualified in the 100m dash.

UIL Math State Qualifier
Andy Le
qualified for the UIL Academic State Meet in the Calculator category. He placed 3rd at the Regional Meet. He will compete at the state meet May 19 at UT Austin.

UIL Science Team State Qualifiers
Andy Le, Ben Klopfenstein, Lucas Bowling
and Lucas Rodriguez qualified for the UIL State Science Team competition after their strong finishes at both District and Regional Competition. They were the 1st place team at the Regional competition. They will compete at the state meet on May 18 at UT Austin.

National Qualifiers- U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad
Andy Le
and Ben Klopfenstein both qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad, held in early April. They both finished in the top ten in the regional event.The event is sponsored by the American Chemical Society. National scores have not been released yet.

State Science Olympiad- AHHS
AHISD was represented at the State Science Olympiad by a team from Alamo Heights HS. The High School team finished 10th out of 30 teams at the state Competition held at Texas A&M University. They also earned state medals in the Boomilever, Disease Detectives, Forensics, and Science Word events.

Team members are: Lucas Bowling, Davis Bratelli, Stuart Flexner-Bury, John Fravell, Nicolas Gutierrez, Bennett Hall, Ben Klopfenstein, Andy Le, Octavio Lopez-Vasquez, Gregory Monagas, Shah Rius, Lucas Rodriguez, Joseph Wilson, Abigail Windsheffel, Elanor Yun, Lulu Durrett, and Hannah Le.

State Science Olympiad- AHJS
AHISD was represented at the State Science Olympiad by a team from Alamo Heights Junior School. AHJS Placed 1st at the Regional Meet and earned one of 30 team spots at the Texas State Science Olympiad Meet. Thomas Emerson and Sophie Fair placed 10th at state in the Write It Do It event.

Team Members are: Ruby Clefisch-Arnett, Malcolm Corey, Max Dewey, Knox Emerson, Sophie Fair, Naomi Georges, Emersyn Gomez, Lou Hoelscher, Lucy Kremer, Matthew Marshall, Ella Mlcak, Siddhi Patel, Siddhi, Margaux Richardson, Samuel Rubenstein, and Tavie Son. Alternates: Logan Ackerman, Cece Hoelscher, and Rowan Nieto.

TMSCA State Meet of Champions
The Junior School UIL Team competed at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Meet of Champions.The AHJS UIL Team as a whole placed 9th out of the 45 qualifying 5A schools.

Individual medals were awarded to:
Pourya Mousavi
- 11th place medal in 6th grade Calculator Skills and 14th place medal in 6th grade General Math.
Sammy Rubenstein
- 14th place medal in 7th grade Calculator Skills.
Memo Seale-
13th place medal in 7th grade Calculator Skills.
Nathan Kolasinski-
20th place medal in 8th grade Calculator Skills.

The AHJS Calculator team was awarded the 6th place Calculator Team trophy. Individual medals were awarded to the top 4 student scores that made up the team total. The Team medals were awarded to: Sammy Rubenstein, Memo Seale, Nathan Kolasinski and Valentina Roibon.

Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council is comprised of Alamo Heights High School Juniors, Alamo Heights Junior School 8th graders, and 5th graders from Cambridge and Woodridge Elementary.

Cambridge Elementary: Parker Batchelor, Claire Magers, John Graham Perez, Wilson Rogers, and Maya Wu.

Woodridge Elementary: Lila Cook, Ben Adcock, Ushe Sykes, Hadley Chavez, and Xochitl Gonzalez.

Alamo Heights Junior School: Fred Moore, Chappell Bailey, Jaydon Adame, Arely Talamantez, Charley Peavy, Victoria Balsam, Grady Gulley, Kayden Escalante, Victoria Cantu, and Alexa Martinez.

Alamo Heights High School: Anjea Santiago, Emilee Smoot, Helena Castano, Lee Brockwell, Haley Reno, Allegra Harrell, Porter McCloskey, Abigail Allison, Rowan Simpson and Whitney Webb.

Senior Ambassadors
Senior Ambassadors Joseph Angulo, Mariah Garner, Jack Hollimon, Rachel Olson, Joseph Toland, Ivan Romanko, Lauren Sicoli, and Alejandra Zapata have shared their senior story multiple times this year at events for our community.

Student Council
AHHS Student Council President Veer Patel and Vice President Lindsey Lam shared an update with Trustees.

Other Board Action and Presentations   

Frank Stanage, Assistant Superintendent for Operations, presented a report on a school bus seatbelt study and compliance as part of Senate Bill 546.

Dr. Jimmie Walker
, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, presented a GT program review. The review reflects a district-wide commitment to fair identification practices, academic excellence, and continuous program improvement. Recent refinements to GT qualification criteria and assessment tools, as well as ongoing feedback from parents and staff, are shaping a more targeted, data-driven approach to GT services.

Matt Streger
, Chief Financial Officer, presented a 2026-27 Budget and Compensation Update. The budget will go before Trustees in June for adoption. The district is working towards a balanced budget, however much uncertainty remains regarding state revenues.

Trustees approved Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) #1 for Alamo Heights Junior School and GMP for the District Community Center, both School Bond 2023 projects.

Trustees approved a resolution declaring surplus property and authorizing the sale of the property which is approximately 1,500 square feet.

Trustees approved a canvass of the 2026 General Elections, Staff Development Waivers for 2026-2027, and an audit engagement letter with Armstrong, Vaughan & Associates.

Trustees approved the renewal of the food service management contract with Southwest Foodservice Excellence, LLC. Due to labor and food price increases, there is a need for AHISD to increase breakfast and lunch prices on its campuses which fall under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

Trustees approved an increase in meal prices for students and adults for the 2026-2027 school year:

Howard/Cambridge/Woodridge Breakfast $2.35 student, $3.75 adult
Junior School Breakfast $2.45 student, $3.75 adult

Howard/Cambridge/Woodridge Lunch $3.65 student, $5.25 adult
Junior School Lunch $3.90 student, $5.25 adult

Trustees approved a written statement and finding of the need for specialized contingent fee legal services, an ordinance authorizing AHISD to enter an agreement to renew and extend contract for collection of delinquent taxes, and an agreement with delinquent tax attorneys, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson LLC.

Donations were accepted from: Alamo Heights Academic Support Group, Multiple Donors, and Alamo Heights School Foundation.The accepted donations totaled $83,520.20.

Trustees accepted a report from the Goals and Priorities; Assessment and Long Range Planning; Building, and Nominations committees; and Alamo Heights School Foundation.

Superintendent's Communication

Dr. Bashara highlighted senior and end of year celebrations, athletic achievements,bond updates, and a look ahead to summer.
