January 3, 2024

Dear AHISD Families-

As we welcome in the new year, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and joyful 2024 to each member of our Alamo Heights Independent School District family! I’m hopeful that you all had a memorable Winter Break these past few weeks and that you find yourselves recharged and ready to accept all the opportunities and promises of a new year.

There is certainly much to celebrate about our achievements in 2023 that showcased the commitment, dedication, and unwavering spirit of our students and staff and highlighted accomplishments in every pillar aligned to our Community Based Accountability System.

We were able to open our schools fully-staffed with incredible talent despite the staffing challenges present for many districts across the state and nation. Additionally, despite the lack of support for public education from the legislative session, we offered competitive salary adjustments to all AHISD staff based on market comparisons and even provided a retention bonus to those employees who chose to return to work as part of the AHISD family this school year.

As a result of the overwhelming community support of Bond 2023, plans for our first construction projects are well underway and the updated designs of the new AHHS facility will be shared at this month’s Board Meeting.

Our students attained record-breaking recognition through the AP Scholar Program, and academic progress and readiness continues to improve at all levels. And finally, our students continue to excel in extracurricular and athletic engagements and have performed well in all levels of UIL competition this year.

Our focus remains steadfast on the work that is before us this upcoming semester, but without a doubt, there is #NoPlaceLikeAHISD!

With the start of the new semester, I want to express my gratitude to our extraordinary educators, support staff, and administrators who continuously go above and beyond to create an enriching and supportive learning environment for every one of our students.

Finally, as January is School Board Recognition Month, I want to thank our AHISD Trustees for their dedication to our district. These seven volunteers are true champions for public schools and for our district, and they are a real blessing to our community. I invite you to reach out to our Trustees with words of appreciation throughout this month ([email protected]) .

I look forward to all this upcoming semester holds for our school community. It is a great privilege to serve as your Superintendent and I thank you for sharing your children with us each day in AHISD!

Mules up!

We're excited to announce that 3 Cambridge Elementary teachers have earned National Board Certification! Julie Draper, Christi Criss, and Kevin Criss have attained the highest credential in the teaching profession!

As a part of the certification process, they built a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, video, and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. For this incredible accomplishment, each educator will receive over $3,000 per year in additional compensation.

They're the first teachers to earn this certification while working in AHISD.

Reminders:

Opt-In for School Text Messages: AHISD utilizes the School Messenger system to communicate important information to families through email, text, and/or phone calls. If any contact information has changed over the summer, like phone numbers or email addresses, families should contact their campus office to update in our student information system. In order to receive text messages, which the district sends only in emergencies, families must opt in to this service. Here's how to sign up for text messages. Those who have previously opted in do not have to complete again.

Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year opens on January 15, 2024. To introduce parents and children to the school, Howard Early Childhood Center is hosting Kinder Preview events beginning in January. Visit our website for the schedule and to register to attend a Kinder Preview. Please share with your family, friends, and neighbors who will have five-year-olds next year.

Grand-Mule/Senior Mule Event: Calling our “Grand-Mules & Senior Mules” to visit our district and learn from Dr. Bashara, district leaders, and students about our AHISD Profile of a Learner. Participants will hear about the educational experience in AHISD that highlights many of our innovative programs and practices. Those participants who are residents of AHISD and are 65 years old and older will receive their Gold Card for free admission to all athletic and fine arts events! We’ll conclude our morning together with a tour of a few classrooms to see learning in action. Attend Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 9:30 - 11:00 AM.  Please email [email protected] to reserve your spot!

If you see something, say something! We ask all AHISD families to commit to having ongoing conversations with students about safety and security and to encourage the reporting of any concerns to a trusted adult on campus. Families can also report safety concerns on our website by clicking Students / Parents and then Safety Concerns.

Please stay connected with all things AHISD by visiting Heights Happenings and also following us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
