Community Engagement with the Board

 

One of the strengths of the Alamo Heights community is the tremendous support and engagement of parents and community members.  In this spirit, the AHISD Board of Trustees always welcomes input from citizens and recommends the following guidelines:

 

Classroom or Campus Issues.  Our community is fortunate to have outstanding administration and staff that manage our schools.  To that extent, the Board encourages citizens to use the following process for classroom or campus input:

Any request or concern regarding a specific class should first be discussed with the appropriate teacher.  Please note that a vast majority of issues are satisfactorily resolved at this level.  Any unresolved issues can then be addressed to an administrator at that campus, such as the principal or assistant principal.

If an issue is still not resolved using the two channels above, it should then be addressed to a district administrator, such as the superintendent or assistant superintendent.  

We strongly encourage the informal resolution of issues using the chain-of-command above.  However, citizens may also initiate a formal grievance which is outlined in the Board Policy.

 

Board Issues.  The primary duties of the Board of Trustees are to set the vision and goals of the District, adopt policies to achieve the vision and goals, hire and evaluate the Superintendent and adopt and oversee the annual budget.  To that extent, the Board welcomes input from citizens, particularly on pertinent issues to consider when fulfilling these duties.  This input can be provided in numerous ways, including:

 

Email/Mail Communications.  All Trustees can be contacted through email addresses or by US mail at 7101 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209.  Depending on the nature of the input, a trustee may respond by phone or email to receive further clarification or better understanding of the input. Please note that a trustee must remain impartial during these communications to avoid recusal if the Board ultimately considers the situation. The trustee may also provide guidance on the chain-of-command to resolve classroom or campus issues.

 

Individual Meetings/Discussions.  Every trustee is available by request to visit with patrons individually.  As noted above, a trustee must remain impartial in these discussions. Therefore, a trustee’s role in these discussions is to receive clarification or gain a better understanding of the issue, as well as provide guidance on the chain-of-command to address classroom or campus issues. 

 

Board Meetings.  The Board of Trustees and Superintendent participate in monthly Board meetings that are open to the public.  The purpose of these meetings is to allow the Board to interact with the school administration to conduct district business.  Our district website provides a live audio stream of the meeting as well as archived recordings of past meetings.  The minutes and presentation materials are also posted on our website.

 

Community members may also address the Board during the “Citizens to be Heard” portion of the regularly scheduled meeting.  Comments are typically limited to three minutes per speaker and, by law, trustees are not allowed to respond.  For privacy reasons, comments on individual personnel or students are prohibited.  For further guidelines go to “Citizens to Be Heard.”
