Alamo Heights ISD is committed to keeping the community informed about the work of the Board of Trustees. This board summary highlights the action and recognitions from the latest Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.


Recognitions


Spotlight on Excellence 

Yvonne Pena, Marcela Figueroa, Yesenia Lopez, and Daniella Gomez, Supported Classroom Paraprofessionals at Howard Early Childhood Center, were honored as the March Spotlight on Excellence recipients. They were nominated by the classroom teachers they work with.


Powering the Profile

Amanda Lawrence, 1st grade teacher at Woodridge, was recognized for Powering the Profile for embodying the AHISD Profile of a Learner. Visit the AHISD YouTube channel for a video showing how she empowers students to “develop a healthy sense of self.”


Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) National Qualifiers 

Dietric Lozano and Maithy Smith were recognized  for their success at the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) state competition. Dietric qualified for nationals in Exploring Non-Core Subject Teaching Careers and Lesson Plan Delivery in CTE. Maithy qualified in Exploring Administrative Careers. Their teacher is Jackie Moore.


UIL State Swim and Dive 

The Board recognized the swimmers and divers who qualified for last month’s UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet. Chase Marafioto earned a silver medal in 1M diving. Other State Qualifiers are: James Holloway, 1M diving; Derek Montoya, 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly; Mason Saunders, 500 Freestyle; Philip Mu, 100 Backstroke; and Boys 200 Freestyle Relay & 400 Freestyle Relay- Derek Montoya, Philip Mu, Austin O’Brien, EJ Gonzales, and Calvin Gamiz- alternate and James Cox- alternate.


Student Council

Lillie Greehey, Co-President of the Alamo Heights High School Student Council, shared the March update with Trustees. Student Council is planning for the Talent Show on May 12 and the last ‘First Friday’ event of the year on May 5. 



Other Board Action and Presentations  


Catherine Widder, District Wellness Coordinator, presented the results of a 2022 Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use for Junior and High School students. 


Frank Stanage, Director of Human Resources and District Safety Coordinator, presented the results of a Texas School Safety Center Intruder Detection Audit.   


Dr. Jimmie Walker, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, presented an overview of results from the Feedback February survey. More than 5,000 parents, students, and teachers participated in the annual survey.       


Trustees heard about a request that was previously approved by the Superintendent for a high school student Food Science trip to Asia in May 2024. 


Trustees approved the cancellation of the May Trustee election. The candidates were both certified as unopposed. 


Trustees approved the School Health Advisory Council’s (SHAC) recommendations for AHJS and AHHS health curriculum. The process, directed by Board resolution, is for the SHAC to review curriculum; discuss in two District Education Advisory Council (DEAC) meetings; and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for approval. 


Trustees approved the naming of the Cambridge Elementary Auditorium after Evelyn Phillips in recognition of a gift to the Alamo Heights School Foundation Endowment. They also approved the naming of the Woodridge iLab after Kelly and Pat Frost in recognition of a gift to the Alamo Heights School Foundation Endowment.


Trustees approved Board Operating Procedures that guide the organizational, logistical, and role-specific activities related to the work of the Board. 


Trustees approved local policies from TASB Update 120 including CB(LOCAL) STATE AND FEDERAL REVENUE SOURCES; CKC(LOCAL) EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLAN; EC(LOCAL) SCHOOL DAY; FNG(LOCAL) STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- STUDENT AND PARENT COMPLAINTS GRIEVANCES; and FO(LOCAL) STUDENT DISCIPLINE. Donations were accepted from: Howard PTO, Alamo Heights Junior School PTO, Alamo Heights School Foundation, and Harry S. and Patricia P. Bowen. The accepted donations totaled $31,876.63.


Trustees accepted reports from the Assessment and Long Range Planning, Building, Goals and Priorities, and Communications committees; District Design Team; District Safety Committee; and Alamo Heights School Foundation.


Superintendent’s Communication


Dr. Bashara highlighted several recent events: 


The Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition was hosted at Woodridge. Ten of our teams competed and six qualified for state on April 1 in Houston.


The first Mulch Mania was held earlier this month with 150 students, staff, and community groups coming together to beautify the Junior School campus. 


The Junior School also hosted Fans in the Stand, a Unified basketball event the Friday before Spring Break.


The Mighty Mule Band performed at Disney World and the High School Orchestra performed in New Orleans over Spring Break.


The AHISD Teacher Job Fair is this Saturday, March 25 at the Muledome.


The annual Festival of Learning and Culture Night is Monday, March 27 at the High School from 5 to 7 p.m.. 


Dr. Bashara has also done several Bond 2023 presentations with additional community presentations scheduled over the next few weeks. The schedule is available on the Bond 2023 website.
